Dear friends,
Yesterday I rewatched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for the third time in anticipation of Quentin Tarantino’s book, which I ordered but it still hasn’t arrived. It’s such a good movie, and the book - Tarantino’s litterature debut - is getting equally as good reviews.
Have a great weekend.
OUR TOP TV SHOW OF THE WEEK
The innocent
On Netflix, in Spanish 🍅 rating: 100%
This mystery mini-series is about Mat, a man who gets into a bar fight and accidently kills someone. He serves four years in prison, and upon his release meets a woman and they stay together until she is pregnant.
The woman then vanishes and bizzare links to the night of his bar fight start appearing.
It’s a crisp, very well-acted and well-executed thriller. Based on the Harlan Coben novel by the same name.
📰 Katey Rich of Vanity Fair: “It's a small-scale human story, precious few of which make it to film these days. It's also, if you're in the market for that kind of thing, an extremely effective tearjerker.”
OUR TOP MOVIE OF THE WEEK
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
New on Amazon Prime. 🍅 rating: 78%
Frances McDormand and Amy Adams star in this forgotten period drama about a nanny who becomes friends with a fancy socialite in pre-WWII London.
The nanny (McDormand) stole the socialite’s details not knowing that what the bourgeois woman wants is not a babysitter but a “social secretary”. Together they go on a crazy 24-hour journey into the world of upper-class society from back then.
It’s a lovely and easy comedy, one that will warm your heart while transporting you to the joyous cold London it portrays.
Stephen Holden New York Times: “How light is this movie? So buoyant that even an air raid warning, signaling that this whole world is about to crumble under the blitz, can't dampen its giddy spirits.”
TOP PICKS OUTSIDE OF NETFLIX AND AMAZON PRIME
Wellington Paranormal
On HBO Max 🍅 rating: 98%
Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of the Conchords) made this very funny mockumentary series about a supernatural police unit in New Zealand.
TOP PICKS OUTSIDE OF NETFLIX AND AMAZON PRIME
The Sparks Brothers
On rental services 🍅 rating: 95%
Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver director Edgar Wright made this excellent documentary about pop duo Sparks. Dubbed as “your favorite band’s favorite band” this group went largely unnoticed by mainstream audiences but was a big influence on many pop acts to follow.
That’s it for this week, I hope there’s something in there for you.
The next edition of this weekly letter will be in your inbox Friday, July 23rd.
Until then,
