In the early 2000s, a stand-up comic turned filmmaker called Coodie wanted to document the life of a young hip-hop artist. It just so happened that the person he chose was Kanye West.
Coodie followed the then-producer everywhere: from trying to get a record deal by randomly stepping into people’s offices and rapping for them, to visiting his mom and telling her stories about producing for Jay-Z. His rise was far from easy or swift, but his talent, ambition, and modesty (back then, yes) are all equally remarkable.
The result is footage that would make for a compelling story even if Kanye never became the success he is today. But since it is Kanye, what a character and what a story.
