Dear friends,
A great read about this year’s Oscar nominations is this article from Vulture “Have the Oscars Finally Accepted Streaming.” I remember when Netflix’s first Oscar gamble came out, Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation, and it didn’t get so much as a mention in the award track. Now Netflix has an astounding 27 Oscar nominations this year alone.
I wish you a great weekend.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan
First episode on Amazon Prime, rest on STARZ 🍅 rating: 100%
This new series is the prequel to the Starz hit Power, both produced by 50 Cent, with this one starring rapper Joey Badass. It’s about a fifteen-year-old called Kanan who is eager to join his mom’s drug business in 1990s South Jamaica, Queens.
As a kid, when James is bullied and beat up in the park, he runs home crying. His mom puts some of his toys in a sock, takes him back to the park and makes him get revenge. “Deal with them or deal with me, but there is nowhere to run when it comes to me”. He beats the other kids with the sock until it gets bloody.
In the world of Power, violence matters but family bonds matter more. It’s a thriller, but it also full of depictions of love. And side note, you don’t need to watch the first series to understand this prequel.
