Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories
On Netflix almost everywhere. In Japanese.
This Japanese drama series is about a restaurant that opens only from midnight to 7 AM in Tokyo’s nightlife district, Shinjuku.
Based on a manga series by the same name, it follows the restaurant owner, The Master, as he interacts with various people from Tokyo’s nights: eccentric types but also taxi drivers and radio hosts.
It’s a show that feels like enjoying a warm cup of tea while eavesdropping on people’s conversations. The food is also incredible, I felt so hungry at the end of each episode.
Alternatives you might like
It’s difficult to find an alternative to Midnight Stories or to compare it to anything else, but if the food element draws in, make sure to also check out Street Food on Netflix. It’s about the best affordable meals in the world.
Ugly Delicious also on Netflix is about a cool chef who explores unlikely dishes. At the center of the first season are questions about what makes some cuisines “fancy”, for example, French or Italian, while almost the same composition dishes, when made in a Chinese kitchen, are considered not fancy (like gnocchi and dumplings).
I hope one of these is for you.
Talk soon,
Bilal
