Dear friends,
If you watched the Netflix show Atypical you know that having a character on the autistic spectrum adds so much to comedy / coming-of-age arcs. It humanizes otherwise sappy stories and makes them engaging.
Similarly, today’s pick was heavily praised by the autism community for its realism, all while being a great comedy.
The Story of Luke
Now on Amazon Prime U.S., Canada, and select other countries.
This original comedy-drama is about a young man with autism called Luke. Propelled by a scandalous grandpa with no filters, Luke decides that what he needs in his life is a relationship.
His dysfunctional family setting, which includes a mother who left him and a neurotic step-mother, makes his search more difficult but more also pressing. Luke decides he first has to get a job, and with a world that doesn’t expect much from him, his unbreakable determination is a joy to watch.

Another great comedy on Amazon Prime is A Man Called Ove. It’s about an old man who decides to commit suicide after his wife passes, but on the way he keeps being interrupted by his need to help his community.
