Dear friends,
I sometimes struggle with period pieces as I feel that period stories have been over-told. That’s why I’d usually rather watch a bad relevant movie than a good period piece.
All that is to say that it takes quite a lot for me to not turn off a movie about another century, and not only did I not do that with The Endless Trench, but I completely fell in love with it.
A warning: this movie is about someone who locks themselves up at home without knowing when their confinement will end. This could be triggering in these times (I found it cathartic and incredibly humbling). If you’re in the mood for an exploration into solitude I highly recommend it, otherwise, it might be better to skip it.
The Endless Trench
Now on Netflix. In Spanish.
This historical drama opens with one of the most thrilling chase scenes in recent memory, as Higinio Blanco, the man at the center of the story, escapes government forces during the Spanish Civil War.
He goes into hiding that, without him realizing, would last 33 years. He would only emerge in a government amnesty in 1969, as would many like him across Spain.
Themes of love (Higinio was confined with his newlywed wife), solitude and fear are at the center of a story that remains thrilling even when it goes through the isolation years.
📺 On Netflix almost everywhere; 🍅 rating: 93%

Everybody Knows is another good Spanish movie on Netflix, although set in modern times. It’s a drama / mystery starring Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz.
A Fortunate Man also on Netflix is a period movie from Denmark about an early renewable energy engineer after he moves to Copenhagen. It’s a beautiful love story and an interesting take on the complicated relationship between religion and science at the time.
Talk on Friday,

Thank you!
