Hi everyone,
I’m Renee, resident curator over at agoodmovietowatch.com. I’m so excited to share my thoughts with you here on The Watch, so let’s get right into it.
Several classics from the 90s have made their way to streaming platforms (and this newsletter) this week. Between this and 90s franchise sequels dominating movie theaters, it’s clear that the decade’s resurgence is here to stay.
According to an NBC News report by Wilson Wong, it’s possible that our desire to return to a simpler time, even if just on screen, is caused by our inability to face the bleakness of the present. I’m leaning on this idea as well—nostalgic cinema as escape—but what do you think?
I hope you’re having a nice Wednesday.
On Netflix
What’s new
The dystopian thriller Gattaca, starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, and Jude Law, is new on Netflix. Much has already been said about the film’s eerily gorgeous shots and intelligent premise, so let me just add that the cherry on top of this work of art is Hawke and Thurman’s palpable chemistry—not surprising, since the actors actually fell in love on set and got married the year after.
Recent arrivals also include prison films The Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption, and the horror classic Nightmare on Elm Street. Both the 1984 original Nightmare and its 2010 remake are available to stream, but trust us: the first one’s better.
What’s expiring
Kahaani, an exciting and fast-paced thriller from India, centers on a pregnant woman’s search for her husband. The award-winning movie leaves Netflix on Monday, March 7.
On Amazon Prime
What’s new
The first season of Swedish noir series Before We Die is now on Amazon. It’s a compelling show that follows Detective Hanna Svensson as she navigates her way through the local crime scene. Before We Die has gotten favorable reviews over the years, although its British remake has not been so lucky.
Dead Poets Society, another Ethan Hawke-starring classic, returns to Amazon this week. It’s joined by the sweet coming-of-age film October Sky and the gastronomic dramedy The Hundred-Foot Journey.
What’s expiring
The Japanese action-crime drama Outrage leaves the platform on March 7th. Takeshi Kitano (of Battle Royale and yakuza film fame) directs and stars in it.
That’s all for today’s recap! I hope you find it useful.
Sincerely,
Renee
More foreign movies please. Thank you!!
